![]() This will hopefully not be the case with Blue Beetle, which is making things easier on its budget by doing special effects and costuming the old-fashioned way. By making so much of the film CGI, namely its shoddy climax, Green Lantern required itself to be a massive hit in order to recover its budget, let alone make any money. Likewise, this will also help keep the budget at a tolerable level. After all, Jaime Reyes' alien suit could have easily been completely computer-animated, eliminating the need for likely harder to accomplish practical effects shots.īy avoiding falling into this lazy trap, however, much of the laughable CGI from Green Lantern's first trailer and theatrical release can also be avoided. Thankfully, the Blue Beetle film has learned from this mistake, even if it logically didn't have to. ![]() Though the Green Lantern Ring constructs would have required CGI, the suit itself should have always been practical. It never made much sense for the Green Lantern movie to have a completely CGI costume, especially when the end result looked so terrible. Since then, there's been no official live-action Green Lantern again (the planned cameo of John Stewart in Zack Snyder's Justice League notwithstanding), which is perhaps the continued legacy of the 2011 film. Plans for sequels and a wider DC Cinematic Universe were promptly abandoned, with the horrendous CGI being about the only thing that anyone ever remembered about Green Lantern. In the end, the movie scraped up a little bit more than its budget, but it was still considered one of the most disappointing superhero movies ever made. Ryan Reynolds called it the "classic studio movie" that was shot without a script firmly in place, while director Martin Campbell regretted ever making the film. The production itself was also hellish, with script changes and other behind-the-scenes issues plaguing the movie. Of course, when it came out and received a critical and financial pounding, said skepticism was proven justified. Thus, in the lead-up to its release, many were rightfully skeptical of how Green Lantern would turn out. The first trailer had CGI that was notably unfinished, though the final product didn't look too much better. The movie's costumes and almost all the Green Lanterns themselves were completely made from computer-generated imaging, much of which wasn't very convincing. Made on a budget of $200 million, the film easily convinced viewers otherwise with its poor special effects. Much of the issue with Green Lantern dealt with its budget, which was enormously high.
